Gruber sawmill History
Gruber Sawmill has been in operation for 18 years. For the first 16 years, it was just a summer job during my time off from teaching. Since I retired after teaching for 29 years, I have upgraded my mill, purchased equipment and expanded my milling business.
The first Gruber Sawmill was started by my grandfather, Ed Gruber in 1945 near Clancy, MT where he cut lumber for nearby ranches and farms.

Jeff Gruber, Owner/OPerator/Author
Born in Libby in 1966, Jeff Gruber has spent a lifetime among people and places that have made Libby such a fascinating town. Living, working, and playing in the most unique of Montana places has imbedded in Jeff a deep love for his hometown and its residents.
Graduating from Libby Senior High School in 1984, Jeff earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Montana College in Dillon in 1989. With the exception of his time going to college and his first teaching job in Judith Gap, MT Jeff has made Libby his home. He used to tell his students that “he hadn’t gone very far in life…”
Returning to teach in his hometown in 1992, Jeff taught a myriad of high school subjects for 29 years before retiring in 2018. In his retirement, Jeff operates a small sawmill business, enjoys going to auction sales and pursues anything with historical subject matter.
